A root canal is a treatment used to save a tooth that is badly decayed and/or infected. Nerve and pulp, the soft area within the center of the tooth, can become irritated, inflamed, and infected due to deep decay, repeated dental procedures on a tooth, large fillings, a crack or chip in the tooth, or trauma to the face. During a root canal procedure, the nerve and pulp is removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed.
Root canal procedures have the reputation of being painful. In reality, most patients report that the procedure itself is no more painful than having a filling placed. The discomfort experienced in the period leading up to dental care is truly the painful period of time, not the root canal procedure itself.
The root canal procedure should relieve the pain you feel. Until your root canal procedure is completely finished – that is to say, the permanent filling is in place and/or the crown is placed, it is wise to minimize chewing on the tooth under repair. This step will help avoid re-contamination of the interior of the tooth and also may prevent a fragile tooth from breaking before the tooth can be fully restored. For the first few days following completion of treatment, the tooth may feel sensitive due to natural tissue inflammation, especially if there was pain or infection before the procedure.
As far as oral health care is concerned, brush and floss as you regularly would and see your dentist at normally scheduled intervals. The final step of the root canal procedure is application of a restoration such as a crown, to cover and protect the tooth.

I recently had to be seen for some severe tooth pain I was having. I couldn’t eat, sleep, or barely drink water with how much pain I was in. They were able to quickly get me in within 2 days of calling, and Dr. Brandon did an amazing job! I had to have an unexpected root canal that day, and after several shots of numbing agent, I could still feel the pain and sensitivity…that’s how bad my tooth was. Luckily, Dr. Brandon assured me he’d work as quickly as possible for me to feel relief. I felt nearly nothing during the 15 minute procedure, and he was checking up on me every 15-20ish seconds to make sure I wasn’t hurting terribly. He did such an amazing job with my pain tolerance, and his assistant Annalise was nothing short of amazing and comforting as well. 10/10 would trust them with all dental checkups and procedures in the future.
I really love Acierno Dentistry, it is rare to go into any business today & be greeted so nicely & respectfully. The women in the office are awesome, they are very easy to speak with, especially if you fell behind on payments, which happened to me during & after Covid. No judgement & happy to work with me. Just really nice people. I first started with Dr. Rebecca, who was awesome, she explained every procedure & treatment every step of the way. My daughter saw Dr. Brandon last week, she was very happy. So happy & impressed she actually scheduled her root canal that she has needs & then is going work in her treatment plan. As i said, I started to get work done in 2019, was scheduled for 3/2020 & didn’t go back because of Covid. I got behind on my payment plan. Far behind. Called to make payments expecting to need a new dentist. Nope. Dr. Acierno was like “get her in here so we can finish the work.” That’s where I am now, a patient of Dr. Acierno & I need 2 or 3 more visits to finish my teeth. Dr. Acierno is so nice, funny, really spot on & thorough, which makes me feel great as a patient. Everyone in the office, the hygienist & assistants are very friendly & calming. So, now that I have written a small essay in the fabulousness of Acierno Dental, go make an appointment & take care of your teeth! Thank you, Acierno Dental!!
After contacting Acierno Family Dentistry for a horrible toothache that I was experiencing, they got me in quick for an xray and were able to schedule me for a root canal the next morning. Dr. Acierno and his Dental Assistant Nina were both great from start to finish. They took the time to ask me every few minutes if I was ok to be sure I was never in any pain. I will definitely be going back for the rest of my dental care.
